Definition

"Liquor" A distilled beverage, liquor, or spirit is an alcoholic beverages containing ethanol that is produced by distilling  ethanol produced by means of fermenting grain, fruit, or vegetables. This excludes undistilled fermented beverages such as beer, wine, and hard cider.

Types

The term spirit refers to a distilled beverage that contains no added sugar and has at least 20% ABV. Popular spirits include brandy, fruit brandy , gin, rum, tequila, vodka,  and whisky.
Distilled beverages that are bottled with added sugar and added flavorings, such as Grand Marnier, Franghelico, and American schnapps, are liqueurs. In common usage, the distinction between spirits and liqueurs is widely unknown or ignored; consequently all alcoholic beverages other than beer and wine are generally referred to as spirits.
Beer and wine, which are not distilled beverages, are limited to a maximum alcohol content of about 20% ABV, as most yeasts cannot reproduce when the concentration of alcohol is above this level; consequently, fermentation ceases at that point.
Fortieled wines are created by adding a distilled beverage  to a wine.

Whisky

Is a type of distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented grain mash. Different grains are used for different varieties, including barley, malted, barley, rye, malted rye, wheat, and maizen. Whisky is aged in wooden casks, made generally of white oak, except that in the United States corn whiskey need not be aged.
Whiskey is a strictly regulated spirit worldwide with many competing denominations of origin and many classes and types. The typical unifying characteristics of the different classes and types are the fermentation of grains, distillation, and aging in wood. Indian whiskey is an exception, where grain fermentation is not a requirement and the most common basis is fermented molasses. The requirement for aging in wood is also not entirely universal.

Vodka

Is a distilled beverage. It is composed primarily of water and ethanol with traces of impurities and flavorings.
Vodka is made by distillation of fermented substances such as grains, potatoes, ormolasses.
Traditionally prepared vodkas had an alcoholic content of 38% by volume. Today, the standard Publish, Russian and Lithuanian vodkas are 40% , although many non-export Russian brands are sold at 38%. The European Union has established a minimum of 37.5% alcohol by volume content for any European vodkato be named as such. Products sold as vodka in the United States must have an alcoholic content of 40% or more. Homemade vodka, referred to as "samogonka" in Russia and Ukraine, sometimes has an ABV as high as 62%.
Vodka is traditionally drunk neat in the vodka belt countries of Eastern Europe and around the Baltic Sea. It is also commonly used in cocktails and mixed drinks, such as the Bloody Mary, the Screwdriver, the  Sex on the Beach, the White Russian, the Black Russian, the vodka tonic, and the vodka martini.

Tequila

Is a spirit made from the blue agave plant, primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila, 65 kilometres (40 mi) northwest of Guadalajara, and in the highlands (Los Altos) of the western Mexican state of  Jalisco.
The red volcanic soil in the surrounding region is particularly well suited to the growing of the blue agave, and more than 300 million of the plants are harvested there each year. Agave tequila grows differently depending on the region. Blue agaves grown in the Highlands region are larger in size and sweeter in aroma and taste. Agaves harvested in the Lowlands, on the other hand, have a more herbaceous fragrance and flavor.
Mexican laws state that tequila can be produced only in the state of Jalisco and limited regions in the states of Guanajuato, Michoacan, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. Mexico has claimed the exclusive international right to the word "tequila", threatening legal actions against manufacturers in other countries.
Tequila is most often made at a 38–40% alcohol content (76–80 proof), but can be produced between 35–55% alcohol content (70–110 proof). Though most tequilas are 80 proof, many distillers will distill to 100 proof and then dilute it with water to reduce its harshness. Some of the more well respected brands distill the alcohol to 80 proof without using additional water as a diluent.

Rum

Is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from sugarcane by-products such as molasses, or, directly from sugarcane juice, by a process offermentation and distillation. The distillate, a clear liquid, is then usually aged in oak barrels. Rum can be referred to by descriptors such as “ron viejo” ("old rum") and "ron añejo" ("aged rum").
Light rums are commonly used in cocktails, whereas "golden" and "dark" rums are typically consumed individually , or for cooking. Premium rums are also available, made to be consumed either straight or iced.
Rum plays a part in the culture of most islands of the West Indies, and has famous associations with the Royal Navy and piracy . Rum has also served as a popular medium of economic exchange, used to help fund enterprises such as slavery, organized crime, and military insurgencies.

Gin

Is a spirit whose predominant flavor is derived from juniper berries . Although several different styles of gin have existed since its origins, it is broadly differentiated into two basic legal categories. Distilled gin is crafted in the traditional manner, by redistilling neutral spirits of agricultural origin with juniper berries and other botanicals. Compound gin is made by simply flavoring neutral spirit with essences and/or other 'natural flavorings' without redistillation, and is not as highly regarded. The minimum bottled alcoholic strength for gin is 37.5% ABV in the E.U., and 40% ABV in the U.S.
Of the several distinct styles of gin, London dry gin, a type of distilled gin, is the most common. In addition to the predominant juniper content, London dry gin is usually distilled in the presence of accenting citrus botanicals, such as lemon and bitter orange peel, as well as a subtle combination of other spices, including any of anise, angelica root and seed, orris rootlicorice root, cinnamon, almond, cubeb, savory, lime peel, grapefruit peel, dragon eye, saffronbaobabfrankincense, coriander, grains of paradise, nutmeg and cassia bark. London dry gin may not contain added sugar or colorants; water is the only permitted additive.

Brandy

From brandywine, derived from Dutch brandewijn "burnt wine" is a spirit produced by distilling wine. Brandy generally contains 35%–60% alcohol by volume and is typically taken as an after-dinner drink. Some brandies are aged in wooden casks, while some are simply coloured with caramel colouring to imitate the effect of such aging.
Brandy is also produced from fermented fruits other than grapes, but these products are typically called eaux-de-vie.
